Te Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington
James is the Managing Director of Studio Pacific Architecture and a registered architect with over 20 years of experience in architecture and urban design. His work spans master planning, architectural design, and landscaping, with a focus on projects that create lasting social and environmental benefits.
Over the past 15 years at Studio Pacific, James has led education and community-focused projects across Aotearoa. His approach to design is simple and practical, always aiming to create spaces that are functional, uplifting, and responsive to their surroundings.
James has a deep interest in Te Tiriti-led design and has studied Te Reo Māori for several years. He is particularly interested in how contemporary design partnerships with mana whenua can shape the built environment through trust-based relationships. He co-founded Te Waharua, Studio Pacific’s Māori design and support group, to help embed these principles into the practice’s work.
Beyond design, James has played a key role in Studio Pacific’s research and innovation initiatives. He was the founding chair of the practice’s research group, has co-authored several papers on building performance, and continues to provide technical reviews for projects. He is also involved in adopting new digital tools that improve the quality and efficiency of project delivery.
Outside of architecture, James is a keen carpenter, giving him a hands-on understanding of how buildings come together—an experience that informs his practical approach to design and construction.
