The new Airways Control Tower at Nelson Airport replaces an existing outdated facility.
The six level building has been designed by Studio Pacific utilising the experience, expertise and technical knowledge gained working on the Airways Wellington Control Tower.
Studio Pacific has led and coordinated the work of the design team in producing a building sited adjacent to the proposed new terminal building, also designed by Studio Pacific. As well as meeting the functional needs of the building, the new tower has an elegant tapered form which provides a convincing counterpoint in its relationship to the neighbouring terminal.
The tower will be built immediately next to an existing power centre on a constrained site. It utilises pre-cast concrete panels stitched together to provide form, structure and cladding. The structural concept merges seamlessly with the architecture to deliver a solution to stringent seismic requirements.
